There have been a number of teams queuing up to launch a potential move for West Brom shot-stopper Sam Johnstone, and West Ham appear to be the latest to do so, according to the Twitter of Ekrem Konur (via Football Transfer Tavern).

The Baggies have been absolutely flying in the Championship so far this season, with the club desperate to try and gain promotion back into the top tier. They’ve adapted well to the kind of football new boss Valerien Ismael wants to see from them and they’re already sitting in second place in the table – and they’ll want to stay there too.

They’ve got a squad overloaded with talent but the man in demand from West Brom is goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. He’s been a mainstay in the side and an impressive one at that, bagging four clean sheets already in just ten league games. He was admired even before he joined the Baggies at both Aston Villa and Preston, and his stock has only risen since.

It’s even led to the player being recognised by his country and he is now firmly in the reckoning on a regular basis for England.

With his performances continuing to catch the eye, it has led to a number of sides claiming an interest in signing the player from Tottenham to Southampton. Now, the latest side to reportedly throw their hat in the ring is West Ham.

Journalist, Ekrem Konur, has confirmed this interest and it means there will likely be a battle on to try and claim his signature either in the winter transfer window or next summer.

The Hammers current shot-stopper is Lukasz Fabianski, but with the shot-stopper hitting 36 years of age, he will be winding his career down in the next few years. They do also have David Martin and Darren Randolph but both are also in the middle of their thirties and Alphonse Areola is only with the club on loan.

Johnstone on the other hand has yet to reach 30 and it means he should still have a few good years at the top of his game – and the Hammers are now ready to try and launch a bid to bring him to the side.

The Verdict

It’s no wonder that Sam Johnstone is wanted by so many sides because of his brilliant performances in goal for club and country. The Hammers would be getting themselves arguably one of the best shot-stoppers in the English game right now if they landed him, so it would be a big coup for David Moyes.

West Ham will face a battle to sign him with interest from Southampton and Tottenham but the Hammers are flying high in the top tier and now might be a better time than ever to try and lure someone to the team because of it. If Johnstone does join them over Spurs and Southampton, it would be a real statement of intent – although the Baggies will be hoping he stays with the Hawthorns and doesn’t join any Premier League side!
