In a recent report, The Athletic revealed that West Ham United have identified Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn as a target. It is understood that the Hammers are eyeing a move to land the Dutch wide player this month.

Bergwijn’s Impressive Form In Dutch Football

Bergwijn is having a decent campaign at the Amsterdam club after he put in a handful of productive displays in the final third. The 26-year-old has found the back of the net on eight occasions and picked up three assists in 20 matches for Ajax this season across multiple competitions.

The Dutch sensation has been a consistent performer in the final third based on his average of 3.1 shots, 2.4 key passes and 2.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Dutch Eredivisie. He has even been careful with his ball distribution after completing 86.7% of his attempted passes in the Dutch top tier (stats via whoscored).

His current contract at the Dutch club will run out in the summer of 2027 which will make it difficult for the Hammers to sign him on the cheap this January.

Should West Ham United Boss David Moyes Snap Bergwijn Up?

Bergwijn is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make some decent plays for others around him on the offensive end of the pitch. He can shoot the ball with venom and accuracy from long range as well.

The Dutch talent is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also operate as a right-winger or as a centre-forward down the middle if asked to do so by his manager. He already knows the Premier League well from his time at Tottenham Hotspur and won’t take much time to settle into life in England if West Ham manage to sign him this month.

Bergwijn will add more pace and goals to David Moyes’ frontline. He would undoubtedly increase competition for places within the East London club‘s squad. Therefore, it is only logical for the Hammers to try everything they can to snap Bergwijn up before the end of this winter transfer window. At 26, he will enter his prime soon which makes him a worthy target for West Ham to consider this month.
