On Sunday’s print edition (via Sport Witness), Record mentioned that West Ham United are among several clubs hoping to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica. It is believed that the Hammers could face competition in the form of Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle United in pursuit of the Uruguayan striker.

Nunez’s Impressive Record At Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica This Season

Nunez is having one of the most productive years of his young career as he has put in a run of influential performances as the focal point of Benfica’s attack. The Artigas-born talent has banged in 11 goals and grabbed two assists in 17 matches for the Portuguese giants this season across multiple competitions.

The Uruguay international has proven his worth as a valuable contributor for Jorge Jesus’ side in the final third by averaging 2.1 shots, 0.9 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per game in the Liga Bwin. However, he needs to work on improving his link-up play deep inside the opponent’s half after completing 66.4% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese first division (stats via whoscored).

Is Nunez A Decent Fit For West Ham United Boss David Moyes?

Nunez can use his quickness and agility to make some clever runs in behind the opposition backline. He is slowly transforming himself into a prolific goal-scorer in Portuguese football and can even create some decent opportunities for his teammates to find the back of the net.

The six-time Uruguay international packs a lot of venom with his shot attempts. However, he is still quite inexperienced at the highest level and might struggle to maintain his good form in English football if the Hammers decide to move in for him next year.

Currently, David Moyes is in need of a new striker who can come in and act as a decent cover for Michail Antonio at the London Stadium. Thus, Nunez fits the bill perfectly as the West Ham boss has the luxury to ease him into his first-team plans in the coming seasons.

The Benfica star has the potential to become a top goal-getter in European football. Plus, he ticks all the right boxes in terms of what Moyes expects from his forwards. With all things considered, Nunez will be a good fit for the Hammers as he will enhance the overall depth of their squad.
