Sheffield Wednesday are reported to be exploring a permanent deal, rather than a loan, for West Ham United midfielder Conor Coventry, in a nod to their newfound pulling power.

The Owls remain near the bottom of the Championship table, in 22nd place, having suffered a tough start to the season under former manager Xisco Munoz, who went winless in his 12 game stint at the club, aside from a penalty shootout victory over Stockport County in the Carabao Cup, before being replaced by current manager Danny Rohl in October.

Having picked up six wins and a draw since then, things are beginning to look up for the Yorkshire side, who are now looking to strengthen their side in the January transfer window ahead of a push to safety in the latter half of the season.

A permanent deal for a young Premier League prospect may have seemed unrealistic for the Owls just months ago, at the end of October, still without a win in the league and looking certain for the drop.

Under Rohl, though by no means out of danger yet, the feeling around the club is on a much more positive note, further solidified by the transfer links that are being attached to the club.

The German boss, alongside picking up victories on a much more frequent basis for Wednesday since his arrival, also arrived in Yorkshire with a good pedigree, having been the assistant manager at RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and the Germany national team in recent years.

Players in need of regular minutes, like Coventry, under a coach with high-quality experience, are now seeing the Owls as a potentially good fit.

The Hammers are willing to let Coventry leave

Having originally believed to be a loan deal negotiation, the Yorkshire Post revealed that West Ham are open to the idea of selling the 23-year-old, with Wednesday keen to make the deal permanent rather than temporary.

Coventry's deal is set to expire this summer, meaning that West Ham will want to take the last chance they may get to demand a fee for the midfielder, who could leave on a free at the end of the season should the London club not extend his deal.

The Yorkshire Post also revealed that Charlton Athletic are also interested in a deal for the Irishman, which could instigate a bidding war between the two clubs. Further interest is reported from League One and the Netherlands.

The midfielder has UEFA Conference League minutes on his CV and a good deal of Championship and League One experience following loan spells at Peterborough, Rotherham and MK Dons.

Having grown up in the West Ham academy, arriving there at the age of 10, it now appears that the time has come for Coventry to find a permanent club where he can benefit from regular game time.

He would slot in well in the midfield unit at Hillsborough Stadium, and no doubt receive expert guidance from Owls veteran Barry Bannan.

Still only aged 23, it is not inconceivable that Wednesday could be signing their next midfield mainstay in Coventry, should he hit the ground running in a potential move to the Yorkshire side.
