The Moroccan defender travelled to France on Deadline Day to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms but had to wait until Tuesday morning to be unveiled as a Marseille player.

Aguerd departs the club after three seasons, having spent last year on loan at Real Sociedad.

Aguerd played a key role for West Ham as they lifted the Conference League in 2023 but was unable to stake a claim for regular minutes under Graham Potter.

West Ham have already brought in Brighton centre-back Igor Julio on loan to replace Aguerd, who has signed a five-year deal at Marseille.

Aguerd’s departure brings to an end a busy first summer transfer window under Potter, with West Ham bringing in seven new players as well as confirming the permanent signing of Jean-Clair Todibo after a successful loan spell last season.

Potter, who secured his first win of the season against Nottingham Forest last weekend, has bolstered his options in midfield, defence and attack though will still feel his side are short of goals heading into the rest of the campaign.

West Ham were in the market for a new striker and while free transfer Callum Wilson scored against Forest, the Hammers lack a reliable forward with both Wilson and Niclas Fullkrug having struggled with injuries.

West Ham thanked Aguerd, who made 61 appearances for the club, for his time in east London.

“The Club would like to thank Nayef for his contribution and wish him the best for the future.”
