West Ham United boss David Moyes is ‘looking at a few different options’ as he aims to bolster the London Stadium outfit’s backline during the January transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Hammers spent close to £160million ahead of the summer’s September 1 deadline, according to Transfermarkt, but they could splash the cash once again during the early stages of 2023.

West Ham transfer news

As per Spanish sources, West Ham are battling it out with Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Villarreal, Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and Roma for the services of Spezia central defender Jakub Kiwior.

But the 22-year-old’s suitors will have to spend big if they want to lure him away from the Serie A side because Italian media outlet TuttoMercatoWeb have revealed that Spezia will not sanction his departure for less than £26million.

According to Football Insider, West Ham have also registered an interest in Michael Keane as Moyes is an admirer of the Everton man.

Corriere dello Sport, via Football.London, have reported that the Hammers are among five Premier League clubs keeping tabs on Juventus centre-half Koni de Winter, who is currently on loan with Empoli and could cost close to £10.3million in January.

Further up the pitch, The Sun have suggested that West Ham and Everton have entered the race to sign Chicago Fire attacker Jhon Duran, with both clubs making contact ahead of a potential switch.

What has Dean Jones said about West Ham’s transfer plans?

Jones understands that West Ham are refusing to limit their options and, instead, have a number of defenders on their radar.

However, the transfer insider has doubts over whether the east Londoners will be able to spend big on a January acquisition.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “They’re looking at a few different options, I’m told, at the moment.

“But they don’t have loads of money to spend for this area of the team. I guess it makes sense being linked to people like Michael Keane.

“I think that they’ll want somebody who’s got experience in the league and somebody that they feel confident can fit straight in.”

Did West Ham sign any defenders in the summer?

As per Sky Sports, West Ham forked out £30million to sign Nayef Aguerd from Ligue 1 side Rennes, but the move has not gone to plan so far.

That is because, just a matter of weeks after his arrival in the capital, the Hammers revealed the Moroccan had been forced to undergo surgery having sustained an ankle injury during a pre-season friendly against Rangers.

Aguerd’s lay-off resulted in Moyes dipping back into the transfer market and, according to The Guardian, the Scotsman spent £10.1million on luring Thilo Kehrer away from the London Stadium.

Left-back Emerson Palmieri also made the switch from Chelsea for £15million, per BBC Sport, but defensive reinforcements would still be welcome at the London Stadium.

That is because West Ham are just a point clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone, having conceded 17 goals.
