West Ham United’s reported interest in Valencia midfielder Hugo Guillamon is ‘one to look out for’, according to journalist Dean Jones.
The 22-year-old has been in impressive form for his boyhood club in the opening weeks of the current campaign and has supposedly caught the eye of the Hammers hierarchy in the process.
A recent report from 90min claimed that West Ham have begun to scout across Europe for midfield options with doubts lingering over the futures of both Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek.
It’s believed that David Moyes’ charges have identified several potential candidates to bolster their engine room options and that Guillamon is firmly on their radar.
The Spain international still has three-and-a-half-years left to run on his £27,000-per-week contract at the Mestalla, though, leaving Valencia in a very strong position around the negotiating table.
Only time will tell if West Ham follow up their interest in Guillamon with a formal offer, but they may have to pay a substantial fee to secure his services.
Jones admitted that he doesn’t ‘know too much’ about the speculation surrounding Guillamon but did state that it appears as though he is a player who West Ham will ‘probably be looking for’.
He told GiveMeSport: “I don’t know too much about this one, but certainly it seems like a player that they will probably be looking for.
“It’s not an obvious one that the top five or six will be looking at, but you can imagine that that situation will change soon if he continues to improve at the rate he’s been improving at. So, I think it’s one to look out for.”
Despite sitting at the base of the midfield, Guillamon has heavily contributed in the final third of the pitch for Valencia this term, racking up three assists in 10 La Liga outings.
The 5 foot 10 ace has also averaged 1.5 key passes and 1.2 crosses per league game, as per WhoScored, placing him second for both metrics when compared to his teammates.
Guillamon has not been neglecting his defensive duties despite his successful forays upfield, though, and has ranked in the 94th percentile for clearances and 86th for aerial duels won amongst his positional peers over the last year, according to FBref.
Therefore, it’s easy to understand why Guillamon has cropped up on West Ham’s radar, and he could prove to be another astute acquisition by Moyes.
