The Guardian reports that West Ham have joined Borussia Dortmund in targeting Edson Álvarez. This year’s Europa Conference League winners see Álvarez as a possible replacement for Declan Rice, who will be allowed to leave this summer.

Álvarez can play as a defensive midfielder or as a centre-back. Last season the 25-year-old featured 44 times in all competitions for Ajax, who finished the Eredivisie campaign in third place. Álvarez joined the Dutch giants from Club América in the summer of 2019. He’s been one of their standout players ever since he joined.

Ajax are demanding £45m for Edson Álvarez, but West Ham are reportedly looking to negotiate a lower fee. If the Hammers don’t meet Ajax’s asking price, they could risk missing out on the Mexican international to Borussia Dortmund. After agreeing to sell Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid for approximately £88.5m, the Bundesliga club have the money to spend. West Ham see Fulham’s João Palhinha and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse as alternatives if they don’t sign Edson Álvarez.
