West Ham United are looking to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona, according to a recent report from The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg.

Depay, who is currently in talks with Barcelona over a mutual contract termination which would make him a free agent, is widely expected to leave the Catalans as they look to reduce their wage bill in a bid to register some of their new signings ahead of the start of the new La Liga season.

Due to the summer arrivals of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, Depay’s chances of getting regular playing minutes under Xavi Hernandez next season have been further dampened so it is no surprise that the ex-Lyon man is on the verge of leaving his current employers.

While Serie A giants Juventus are believed to be leading the race for his signature, West Ham have now joined the hunt for Depay as they look to bolster their attacking options before the transfer window shuts in early September.

Following the departure of Nikola Vlasic to Torino on a loan deal, David Moyes’ men could certainly do with a new attacker, especially with the East Londoners reportedly prepared to listen to offers for Algerian winger Said Benrahma off the back of an underwhelming spell since his arrival from Brentford.

After missing out on Amadou Onana’s signature to Everton, West Ham have also been dealt another blow in their search for midfield reinforcement having had an initial £25million bid for Matheus Nunes rejected with Sporting Lisbon not prepared to listen to offers below £42m.

The Hammers kicked off their 202/23 Premier League campaign on the back foot following a 2-0 defeat against defending champions Manchester City on Sunday.

Last year’s Europa League semi-finalists will now be looking to bounce back this weekend with a trip to the City Ground to face off against newly-promoted Nottingham Forest.
