West Ham hold talks with Lopetegui to replace Moyes | OneFootball

West Ham United are actively searching for a David Moyes replacement and have held productive talks with former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Julen Lopetegui, according to the Guardian.

The 57-year-old Spaniard impressed during discussions, but the club is also considering alternatives.

Lopetegui has been out of work since leaving Wolves last summer after leading them to a 13th-place finish. He won 10, drew five and lost 12 of his 27 matches in charge of the club.

His experience, including Europa League success with Sevilla, appeals to West Ham co-owner David Sullivan, but some people within the club believe a younger manager is needed.

Lopetegui’s past controversies, including leaving the Spanish national team before the World Cup for a short-lived Real Madrid stint, also raise concerns.

However, his Premier League experience and constant links to the job cannot be ignored.

West Ham have also held talks with highly-rated Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim, who flew to London to meet Sullivan.

But Amorim’s €15 million buyout clause and reported hesitation after the visit complicates matters.

Lille’s Paulo Fonseca, who was previously interviewed by Sullivan in 2018, is also a possibility.

Fonseca stabilised Lille when he took over, helping them qualify for the Europa Conference League at the end of last season. They could qualify for the Champions League this term.

He has also helped develop young players such as Leny Yoro, who will be sold for a huge profit this summer.

Moyes’ departure seems inevitable after a disappointing season. Last weekend’s 5-2 defeat against Crystal Palace looked like the final straw.

West Ham are yet to make an official announcement, but preparations for change are underway.
