West Ham target Memphis Depay was “put to them as an option”, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

David Moyes’ side emerged as shock contenders to sign the Dutch international last week, although Jones played down the chances of the ex-Manchester United star ending up at the London Stadium.

What’s the latest news involving Depay?

According to the Guardian, West Ham were interested in signing the Barcelona ace, who’s being forced out of the Nou Camp to ease the La Liga club’s financial problems.

Depay only joined from Lyon last summer, but he’s already entered the final 12 months of his £158,000 per-week contract and the report claimed the Hammers thought they had a chance of convincing him to move to east London.

Ultimately, Depay, who has 146 career senior goals to his name, only ever wanted to move to a Champions League club, which explains why he’s on the verge of signing for Juventus.

What year was the London Stadium built?

Before the weekend, Fabrizio Romano reported that Depay’s switch to the Old Lady was ‘well advanced’ with the news coming after Moyes denied that West Ham have launched a bid to sign the 28-year-old following rumours about a London club making an offer.

What did Jones say about Depay?

When asked whether Depay was ever an option for West Ham, he told GIVEMESPORT: “Not seriously, no. He was put to them as an option and they said they would think about it and they talked about it internally, but they didn’t look to pursue it.”

Are West Ham close to signing anyone?

Despite missing out on some of their top targets, it’s still been a progressive window for the Hammers, who have been able to welcome five new players on board.

None of their summer arrivals have started in their first two Premier League games, which have both ended in defeat, but Alphonse Areola, Nayef Aguerd, Flynn Downes, Gianluca Scamacca and Maxwel Cornet have all been added to Moyes’ squad.

But West Ham still look short at the heart of their defence and at left-back, although their options could be about to improve.

According to The Sun, the London Stadium outfit are close to securing deals for Chelsea left-back Emerson and PSG centre back Thilo Kehrer.

The report claims that West Ham could pay around £29m for the defensive pair, who they’re hoping to have through the door this week.
