FLW compares Albion's average attendance with the rest of the Championship after the first month of the season

Throughout the Championship, there is always a debate as to which club has the most loyal support when it comes to packing out their home stadium.

West Bromwich Albion fans will definitely make a case that their supporters rank extremely high on that list, with The Hawthorns often extremely busy on matchday when the Baggies are in the Championship, as well as the full-houses expected for West Midlands derbies and crucial encounters involving Carlos Corberan's side.

The club's B71 home is often cited as a ground where opposition often struggle to take points from, particularly when Albion are a strong force in the second tier, which is exactly what panned out last season despite failing to achieve a Premier League return in the play-offs.

This season has seen Corberan's side start in an extremely positive manner with 10 points out of a possible 12, defeating Swansea City at 'The Shrine' last weekend through a solitary Jayson Molumby effort, as well as holding promotion favourites Leeds United to a 0-0 draw in their first home encounter of the season back on August 17th.

Average attendance numbers have been strong for a lengthy period as far as West Brom are concerned, so with that being said, FLW compares the numbers from this particular metric against the rest of the second tier after the first month of the new season has surpassed.

According to figures from Transfermarkt, West Brom's encounters against Leeds and Swansea mean they have the ninth-strongest average attendance in the month of August, sandwiched inbetween Norwich City and Stoke City.

The Hawthorns has a current capacity of 26,850 and out of those two home fixtures in August have recorded an average figure of 25,152, meaning that only 1,698 seats in the stadium haven't been vacated on matchday.

Putting that into perspective against the other 23 clubs currently in the Championship, Albion have the fifth-fullest stadium across the division with 93.7% of the stadium filled on average - only Luton Town, Portsmouth, Norwich and Leeds have seen a higher percentage recorded so far this season, which is a testament to the home support in this part of the West Midlands, with it revealed prior to the 0-0 draw with Daniel Farke's side that over 20,000 supporters had purchased a season ticket.

"This can only make you feel proud, not just me, but for everyone who works for the club because we know it gives you a level of responsibility and determination to compensate them for what they are giving to you. This is only ever a positive for us," Corberan told official club media after being made aware of the statistic.

Given the size of the stadium and their unwavering support, it perhaps comes as no surprise that Sunderland, who currently top the Championship, also lead the way in terms of average attendance figures so far this season, with a figure of 40,059 for home encounters with Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley.

Unsurprisingly, the two clubs with the smallest grounds in the division come bottom of the pile, with Oxford United just falling behind Luton in 24th spot, although an average attendance figure of 11,368 at the Kassam Stadium has roared Des Buckingham's side on to two impressive victories against Norwich City and Preston North End.

Ninth is a more-than respectable position though for Albion in that regard, with The Hawthorns being the 13th-largest ground in the Championship overall, seeing 50,034 spectators pass through the turnstiles - 4,322 of which have been visiting from South Wales or West Yorkshire.

Last season saw West Brom hold the joint fourth-strongest home record behind Ipswich, Leeds, Leicester, and tied with Norwich - accumulating 49 of their 75 points in B71 as they finished in their strongest position since being relegated in 2021. A similar or greater points total on home turf this time around would definitely give Corberan's men the foundations required to mount a serious promotion bid.
