Luke Hatfield said that the last he heard West Brom were still hoping to secure a new deal for Sam Johnstone.

The England goalkeeper, valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, has started the last 11 games in the Championship for the Baggies after missing the opening day draw at Bournemouth but is out of contract next summer and has been linked with Southampton in recent weeks.

Those talks came after Johnstone was strongly touted with a move to West Ham and Tottenham in the summer but ended up staying with West Brom despite their relegation to the second-tier.

What's the latest news with Johnstone?

It's clear that a goalkeeper of Johnstone's quality should be playing in the Premier League, especially with the 28-year-old now a regular part of Gareth Southgate's England squad, not to mention there's a World Cup next year.

Dropping into the Championship hasn't hindered his chances of playing international football, though, with two of his three caps for England coming when playing outside of the top-flight.

But if Johnstone doesn't sign fresh terms, January will be the last opportunity that the Baggies have to get a fee for the former Manchester United shotstopper, who'll be available for nothing in 2022.

Hatfield, though, thinks that West Brom are still hopeful of getting Johnstone to commit his future to the Hawthorns outfit.

What did Hatfield say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "They are still involved in contract talks, the last we heard, so we don't know what's going to happen there."

Does Johnstone have a future at West Brom past this season?

It's difficult to predict where Johnstone will be playing his football next term, but for the Baggies to have any chance of keeping him, then getting promoted is simply a must.

Having one season out of the Premier League is feasible, but two is extremely unlikely to be an option for Johnstone, who'll not be short of options whether that's in January or the summer months.

He'll have to be careful, though, because the likes of Tottenham, West Ham and Southampton all have standout first-choice goalkeepers, so he won't want to end up sitting on the bench.
