West Brom make Darnell Furlong transfer decision after play-off disappointment

The Baggies missed out on their chance to win promotion to the Premier League, after being defeated by Southampton over two legs.

So with another season in the Championship for Albion next season, work needs to be done this summer in order to end what will be a four-year top-flight exile come the end of the 2014/15 season.

And now manager Carlos Corberan appears to be wasting no time in shaping his squad to his likening this summer, with a busy couple of months expected at the club.

One of those players who doesn't appear to fit into the Spaniards' plans at The Hawthorns is Furlong, who's five-year-long stint in the West Midlands could be about to come to a close.

Furlong set to be sold

Reporting via his Patreon, journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that West Brom will sell Furlong this summer, who only has a year remaining on his contract with the club.

Nixon reports that the 28-year-old is largely being moved on in an attempt to raise further transfer funds for Corberan to work with.

He concludes by stating that Premier League clubs have been alerted to Furlong's availability, and that a fee of £2m may be all it takes for the Englishman to depart The Hawthorns.

Signed on a four-year deal from Queens Park Rangers in 2019, Furlong has gone on to become a key player for Albion during his time at the club.

The full-back has made over 200 appearances for The Baggies in all competitions, and has been a mainstay in the side for various different managers.

Losing Furlong will be a sizeable blow

Should Furlong leave the club in the coming weeks, West Brom would be left without a recognised senior right-back to take his place.

Spaniard Pipa will return to his parent club Ludogorets, and 34-year-old Martin Kelly has not been offered a new contract at The Hawthorns and is to become a free agent.

This news surrounding Furlong may well come as somewhat of a surprise to Baggies fans, and will mean a full overhaul of the right-back position will have to take place this summer.

It does appear to be somewhat of a head-scratching decision, as although Albion wish to raise funds for the summer window, taking away your only right-back - and a good one at that - could be seen as a pretty significant risk by Corberan.

In fact, no outfield player in the Championship made more appearances than Furlong in the 2023/24 season, with 44 starts and two further substitute appearances.

This only further highlights just how pivotal a player he's been for Baggies, as his departure would leave a big pair of boots to fill.

An attacking threat as much of a defensive stalwart, Furlong's 40 shots in the Championship this season was only bettered by 1.8% of second tier right-backs, whilst his 90 aerial duels won were only bettered by 3.6% - per FotMob.

The Baggies boss will surely now require multiple additions in that spot this summer, but if he can't seal the deals he wants, sanctioning Furlong's exit may prove to be one with plenty of potential to backfire.
