West Bromwich Albion are showing an interest in Swansea City talisman Jamie Paterson ahead of the January transfer window opening in a month’s time, according to the Daily Mail.
Following a trial at Middlesbrough over the summer, Paterson arrived at the Swans on a one-year deal with Russell Martin taking a chance on him despite several injuries over previous seasons whilst at Bristol City.
And the 29-year-old has repaid the faith that has been shown in him by being one of the Welsh side’s star performers so far this season, scoring eight times and notching four assists whilst playing a part in all 20 Championship matches.
Paterson’s biggest moments of the season came in a 3-0 victory over Cardiff City where he scored and assisted the other two goals but he also had a hand in both strikes in the 2-1 win over West Brom at the Liberty Stadium.
That is potentially why Valerien Ismael seems to have his eye on him as he looks to bolster his forward line for the second half of the season.
Paterson’s contract at Swansea expires in the summer meaning that they are potentially vulnerable to losing him and per the Mail, other unnamed Championship clubs as well as the Baggies are looking into a move for him come the start of 2022.
The Verdict
No-one expected Paterson to go into Swansea and make the impact he has, especially considering he had a bit of a broken pre-season.
Middlesbrough’s loss after turning down the opportunity to sign the 29-year-old though has been Swansea’s gain as he’s played a crucial part in many of their wins to start firing them up the table.
But with Paterson being on just a one-year deal it always leaves the option open of addressing his future in January and nothing seems to be off the table.
He will be enjoying life at Swansea but if West Brom could offer him the same football and a longer contract with more financial security – as well as being closer to his hometown of Coventry – then that could be a little bit of a head-turner.
