Andrew Hughes has dropped an update on the future of on-loan West Bromwich Albion centre-forward Jordan Hugill.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by the Express & Star, the Norwich City loan manager revealed that the Premier League side will not be recalling the centre-forward from his loan spell at The Hawthorns this month.

However, Hughes went on to suggest that, with reported interest in the 29-year-old from both Hull City and Millwall, Hugill, his agent and Valerien Ismael could decide that a move to another Championship side would suit all parties.

Speaking about the future of the striker, Hughes said: “I’d be lying if I sat here and said he’s over the moon, let’s not kid ourselves. Jordan is 29 years of age, he wants to play and he wants to score goals. He’s scored one goal, so he’s not scored enough, so there is an argument of whether we could recall him. Well, we’re not going to recall a striker that’s not in form.

“I can’t control the West Brom manager’s decisions, he’s doing what he feels is best for the club and what is best to get West Brom promoted. [But] Jordan is not getting the minutes. He is an asset to us and we do care about him but I think it’s just a waiting game in terms of his agent and West Brom to see what comes.”

Ismael must axe Hugill

Hughes’ suggestion that Hugill has not scored enough goals during his time with West Brom is something of an understatement, as not only has the 29-year-old centre-forward been poor in front of goal, he has also offered his side very little overall in an attacking capacity.

Indeed, over his 20 Championship appearances – only seven of which have come as starts – in the current campaign, the £1.62m-rated striker has – as previously mentioned – hit the back of the net just once.

However, Hugill has also failed to provide his teammates with a single assist, has created no big chances for his side and has missed nine big chances of his own, in addition to hitting the target with an average of just 0.4 shots per game.

These returns have seen the player who Daniel Farke dubbed a “leader” average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.56, ranking him as Ismael’s fifth-worst performer in the second tier.

As such, considering the fact that West Brom are very much in the race for automatic promotion this season, it is clear for all to see that Hugill’s metrics are simply not good enough for a side fighting to reach the Premier League.

And, when factoring in that Albion are currently paying the 29-year-old an astronomical £36k-per-week, the argument that the Norwich loanee is stealing a living at The Hawthorns is a rather easy one to make.

So, with Hugill clearly wanting to play regular first-team football and West Brom being in need of a forward who can help fire them up this season, it would very much appear a wise move for Ismael to cut the striker’s spell in West Bromwich short this month, and subsequently reinvest the money saved on Hugill’s salary in a better-suited target.
