West Brom and Sheffield United are interested in making a late cut-price move for Oostende defender Jack Hendry ahead of the transfer deadline, according to the Daily Mail.

Hendry only made the permanent move to Oostende from Celtic earlier this summer for a fee of around £1.8 million. However, that came following the Belgium side’s decision to activate the purchase option they had on his loan deal last term.

According to the Daily Mail, Oostende are now potentially keen to make a quick profit on the defender before the summer transfer window comes to an end.

The Belgium side are thought to be valuing him at around £8 million but they would be prepared to agree a deal at around the £4 million mark.

The Daily Mail’s report reveals that both West Brom and Sheffield United are amongst the sides to have made enquiries to Oostende over Hendry’s potential availability.

While there is also thought to be rival interest from the likes of Southampton, Burnley, Newcastle United and, Serie A side, Torino.

The verdict

This could be one to keep an eye on in the closing days of the transfer window and Hendry would potentially be a smart pick-up for both West Brom and Sheffield United if they could secure him on a cut-price deal from Oostende.

It seems that Oostende are not wanting to stand in the defender’s way of securing a move away from the club despite him having just re-joined them this summer on a permanent deal.

You can see why the chance to make a swift profit on him is appealing considering that they only paid £1.8 million for his services.

Sheffield United could do with adding another centre-back option to their squad after their poor start to the campaign. Hendry would be able to provide another quality option to Slavisa Jokanovic with Ben Davies having also been snapped up from Liverpool.

West Brom have already added to their defence this summer too with the arrival of Brighton’s Matt Clarke. However, Hendry’s performances for Scotland at the Euros and in Belgium with Oostende suggest that he would be a quality addition to make to their already strong squad.

However, interest from the Premier League might make this deal a difficult one for both West Brom and Sheffield United to sort out before the window closes.
