Wesley Sneijder says he turned down the chance to join Liverpool in 2013 because he wanted to win trophies.

Sneijder, who joined Qatari club Al-Gharafa in January following his release from Nice, claims the Reds tried to sign him when he left Inter Milan for Galatasaray five years ago.

And after winning two Süper Lig titles and and three Turkish cups during his spell at the Türk Telekom Stadium, the Dutchman says he feels vindicated by his decision to give Anfield a wide berth.

“Many clubs wanted to know when I was leaving Inter, and Liverpool was one of those clubs, so people were surprised I chose Galatasaray. Why Galatasaray and not Liverpool?” he said.

“But I am a winner, I play for prizes, so I went to Galatasaray because I thought that I would win more at Galatasaray and be a champion more so than at Liverpool and I think that I made the right choice.

“I have had nice years in Turkey.”

Once considered one of the world’s best attacking midfielders, the now 33-year-old’s performances took a sharp decline in recent years and after moving to Ligue 1 last summer, he made just eight appearances for Nice before heading to Qatar.

And the same summer they supposedly missed out on his signature, Liverpool signed Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge instead, so it wasn’t all bad news.
