His time at the City Ground saw him amass 402 appearances, scoring 14 goals and helping Forest secure promotion from League One in the 2007–08 season.

In January 2012, Morgan made a significant move to Leicester City for a reported fee of £1 million. At the time, the Foxes were pushing for Premier League promotion, and Morgan quickly established himself as their defensive leader. As a result, he captained Leicester to the Championship title in the 2013–14 season, leading them back to the Premier League after a ten-year absence.
