Chelsea forward Timo Werner is said to be among Borussia Dortmund’s potential options to replace Erling Haaland next summer.

Haaland is expected to be one of the most sought after properties in world football during next summer’s transfer window, the Norwegian’s contract possessing a €75 million (£68m) release clause which is set to entice virtually all of Europe’s elite.

According to German publication, Bild, Haaland is ‘almost certain’ to leave the Westfalenstadion next summer, with the report saying that sporting director Michel Zorc has been tasked with finding a suitable replacement for the 21-year-old goal machine.

They say that one ‘surprising solution’ is that of Chelsea‘s Timo Werner, the striker having struggled to replicate the form he managed to produce for RB Leipzig.

The Germany international netted 95 goals in 159 appearances for Die Rotten Bull to earn himself a £47 million move to Stamford Bridge last summer.

However, his debut campaign in the Premier League was far less prolific, netting just six times in 35 league outings, though he did register an impressive 12 assists.

Chelsea have, however, since spent £97.5m to bring Romelu Lukaku to the club, with Werner the man having made way in the starting XI in the three league games since the Belgian’s signing.

Werner has been linked with a potential reunion with former Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann at Bayern Munich in recent weeks, though the perennial Bundesliga winners could face competition from their rivals, Dortmund.

The report does, however, state that Werner is not the first-choice target to replace Haaland with Dortmund ‘not completely convinced of him’. The 25-year-old would also likely need to take a wage cut to seal a move, with his current £17m-a-year wages proving prohibitive for the Bundesliga club at present.
