Manchester United player Nemanja Matic says his side are ready to show Liverpool that they can compete for the Premier League title this season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side claimed a 1-0 victory at Burnley to go three points clear of the Reds ahead of their trip to Anfield this Sunday.
Paul Pogba popped up with a goal in the second half of the game to earn victory for United at Turf Moor.
The Red Devils were unfortunate to see a Harry Maguire header disallowed in the first half, but they did not lose their composure and dominated proceedings after the break.
They were rewarded for their patience when Pogba’s deflected volley found the back of the net in the 71st minute.
Matic, who has earned 17 senior appearances this campaign, said his side are ready to challenge for the title.
“This kind of win shows we’re ready to compete for the title,” he told MUTV. “Sometimes we look like a team that wants to score as soon as possible and we panic, today we showed more maturity, we were clever.
“It’s always hard here. Not to concede a goal from long balls, set pieces, we prepared the game well and we deserve the three points.”
Solskjaer’s men are currently unbeaten in 11 Premier League fixtures, winning nine and drawing two.
Following the 2-2 draw at Leicester City, they claimed three consecutive league wins, including triumphs over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
United will now travel to Merseyside hoping to increase the gap between themselves and Liverpool.
