Post-match reaction following our cup exit in Bielefeld

It was a Friday evening that the Green-Whites had certainly pictured differently. Arminia’s stoppage-time winner sent the ten men of Werder out of the DFB-Pokal in the first round. WERDER.DE gathered the post-match reaction from Bielefeld.

Head coach Horst Steffen: “We’re out and it’s not a nice feeling. The first half was solid enough; we didn’t allow many chances and had some openings of our own. The red card played into Arminia’s hands of course. They took control and pegged us back inside our own half. We had hoped to get to extra time or perhaps snatch a late goal ourselves, but then we ended up conceding the winner at the death, which hurts. We’re all incredibly disappointed.”

Captain Marco Friedl: “We failed to capitalise on our big chances in the first half. Arminia scored with more or less their first opportunity of the game – they hadn’t created much until then. Arminia obviously had more of the game after the red card. Now we're out and under pressure before the league’s even begun. We only have ourselves to blame.”

Niklas Stark: “The disappointment is the overwhelming feeling at the moment. We wanted to start the season well. Now we have to improve in the coming matches and rediscover that positive energy. We had the game under control until the red card, then it slipped from our grasp.“

Keke Topp: “The first half was good. We had two or three golden chances, but like in pre-season, they didn’t want to go in – we just can’t get that monkey off our back at the moment. Bielefeld hadn’t really had an opening, but then the red card meant they had more of the game. I’m not blaming Leo though – it was the last thing he wanted. Then it’s difficult when you’re a man down against a side like Bielefeld in this stadium.”
