Werder Bremen have announced the sacking of head coach Alexander Nouri.

Following the sacking of Andries Jonker at VfL Wolfsburg, Nouri is the second Bundesliga coach to lose his job this season.

“Nouri has been dismissed”, said Bremen’s Assistant coach Markus Feldhoff to a local Newspaper on Monday morning. According to reports, Nouri has already left the stadium before team training.

Bremen are currently 17th in the Bundesliga table and have not won any of their opening nine games.

Nouri took over 13 months ago and, after an initial struggle, almost led the club into the Europa League.

A bad spell during the winter saw his job on the line but Bremen responded with nine wins in 11 games, eventually finishing eighth.

Following a tricky transfer window, though, the club has taken huge steps backwards and now find themselves in the depths of another relegation battle.

“Alex took on a very difficult task last season and did a fantastic job,” sporting director Frank Baumann told the club’s official website. “He has our thanks for that.

“He has all the qualities of a successful coach, and I’m sure that he will continue his path with success elsewhere.

“We are convinced that this group of coaches can provide some much-needed impetus over the coming days. Hopefully that can rid the insecurity felt among the players, which is palpable following recent results.”

Bremen say they hope to appoint a permanent replacement for Nouri during next month’s international break.
