The 2020/21 Bundesliga season drew to a conclusion on Saturday, with a dramatic relegation dogfight still to be decided.
Here’s what went down.
Werder Bremen have been relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time in 41 years after FC Köln earned a late 1-0 win over Schalke.
Thomas Schaaf, brought in to save the club for their last game with Borussia Mönchengladbach, couldn’t work his magic as they suffered a 4-2 defeat at home.
The club dropped into 17th place after losing nine of their last ten games, meaning they have been relegated for the first time since 1980.
Their fate was sealed when Sebastiaan Bornauw scored an 85th-minute winner for Köln with Die Geißböcke earning a second chance and now taking their place in the relegation play-off.
Arminia Bielefeld have survived to enjoy an extraordinary second-year stint in the Bundesliga after pulling off a surprise 2-0 win away to Stuttgart.
Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund had all already qualified for the Champions League, while Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen will appear in the Europa League.
But there was a passage to the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League to be earned this afternoon.
Union Berlin, playing in only their second ever season in the Bundesliga, have qualified for the competition in extraordinary circumstances finishing in seventh place thanks to Max Kruse’s stoppage-time header earning their 2-1 win over RB Leipzig.
The champions said farewell to Hansi Flick in style with a thumping win over Augsburg, where Robert Lewandowski broke Gerd Müller’s single-season goalscoring record.
Erling Haaland has scored his 40th goal of the season the final game before the Marco Rose era ended in a win.
