Werder Bremen keeper Michael Zetterer has emphatically quashed rumors that he may be leaving the Bundesliga this summer. Zetterer also aggressively denied reports in Kicker and other German sources that he presently found himself fighting for his starting place. The Munich native spoke to one of his hometown newspapers.

[Newly appointed Werder head coach] Horst Steffen has made it very clear to me that I am number one,” Zetterer told the Münchner Merkur.I want to stay here in Bremen and play another good season. I think we can qualify for Europe.”

Zetterer has been linked with several clubs abroad, including Premier League outfits Manchester City and West Ham United. The fact that Bremen signed their preferred keeper of the future Mio Backhaus to a lucrative contract extensionthis summer suggests that Zetterer’s time with Bremen might be running short.

The 29-year-old Zetterer nevertheless remains under contract with his Hanseatic city state side through 2027. Bremen are under to pressure to sell and Zetterer also made clear that he felt no internal pressure from Backhaus.

[Horst Steffen and I] are a perfect match,” Zetterer said. “He wants to play football. That suits me well. There’s always a challenger of some sort.
