Kicker reports that Werder Bremen are about to seal a loan deal for Leeds United fullback Isaac Schmidt after all. A long summer of seemingly endless negotiations between the Bundesliga and Premier League clubs appeared as if it would produce nothing. As the final weekend of the summer transfer window beckons, however, the two sides have evidently worked it out. Per Kicker, the deal took so long to close out due to Leeds needed to procure a replacement.
Kicker claims that Schmidt will head to the Hanseaten on loan with a €3m purchase option. Werder have already managed to land a right back in recent days via the signing of Southampton’s Yukinari Sugawara, but remain desperate for bodies following injuries to defenders Maximilian Wöber and Olivier Deman. Bad news continues to rain down on a Bremen camp in crisis.
Captain Marco Friedl and talismanic fullback Felix Agu are also struggling with injuries ahead of this weekend’s Bundesliga encounter against Bayer Leverkusen. Bremen – the lone top flight side to find themselves tossed out of the DFB Pokal – were easily dismantled by Eintracht Frankfurt in last weekend’s Bundesliga opener.
Schmidt will serve as Bremen’s fourth summer signing after Wöber, Samuel Mbangula, and back-up keeper Karl Hein. Kicker reports that Clemens Fritz, Peter Niemeyer, and the rest of the Bremen administrative team will be hard at work over the weekend attempting to secure at least two new signings.
A midfielder and striker (both unnamed) are said to be targeted. Kicker’s Bremen correspondent Tim Lüddecke notes that both of the two new players are due to arrive on loan due to Bremen’s budgetary constrains.
