Werder Bremen have confirmed that defender Maximilian Wöber will be out of “several weeks” with a thigh injury. Wöber incurred injury in the Bundesliga outfit’s embarrassing DFB-Pokal defeat against 2. Bundesliga side Arminia Bielefeld on Friday night. Unfortunately, this news counts as especially debilitating for understaffed Bremen.

Wöber was one of just two new signings brought in by Werder during the summer transfer window. New Bremen head coach Horst Steffen relied upon the Leeds United loanee as his starting left-back. Wöber, after central defender Amos Pieper, is the second Werder defender to receive a medium-term injury prognoses in the last week.

Olivier Deman ended up replacing Wöber in the Pokal fixture. Versatile German fullback Felix Agu can switch over to the left-hand side to fill in, but Werder (with Mitchell Weiser injured) don’t have another right back to take Agu’s place at the moment. Club management’s attempts to fill the vacancy have produced nothing thus far.

Austrian international Wöber – who also featured on loan with Borussia Mönchengladbach during the 2023/24 Bundesliga season – was known to be enthusiastic about working with the Hanseaten and was set to serve as a leader in the team this year. The squad’s current leader, captain Marco Friedl, openly criticized management after the Friday Pokal loss.
