Ange Postecoglou says he cannot sympathise with Ruben Amorim’s predicament at Manchester United because he has lived the same situation at Tottenham for the last two months.

United were without several first-team regulars for their trip to Tottenham and named a number of teenagers on the bench, before going down to James Maddison’s first-half goal.

Tottenham’s excessive injury crisis seems to be easing slightly to the relief of Postecoglou.

The defeat, meanwhile, leaves United stranded in 15th place and while appreciating their situation, Postecoglou claimed he cannot feel sympathetic.

“If I check my office I don’t have any sympathy cards from other managers so I can tell you that hasn’t happened,” he revealed.

“I could see today Ruben, he’s had to put a team together, play players out of position, have kids on the bench well.

“Welcome to my world but that’s for one game, now do that for two months.

“Any club, do that for two months because, I thought United were good today considering all of that.

“We’ve had our days where we were good, we’ve beaten Liverpool in this spell. We’ve had other significant victories but do that for two months.”

Maddison made a goalscoring return for Tottenham and appeared to hit back at Roy Keane as he celebrated his first-half opener, following criticism from the former Man Utd midfielder this week.

Postecoglou admitted he wasn’t surprised to see the England international react to Keane’s recent criticism.

“Everyone has mentioned his celebration, I didn’t see it so I cannot comment on it,” he continued.

“It doesn’t surprise me that Madders didn’t accept what was being said about him and threw a shot back over the bough.

“It’s great to have him back. He’s a quality player. If you just look at his goals return again this year from midfield, it’s still right up there.

“He got frustrated when he got injured and to be honest, we didn’t think he would be back for another couple of weeks but he’s worked awfully hard and done everything right to make sure he’s available.”
