Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has said that he would welcome the idea of a Madrid derby in the UEFA Champions League final.

Cerezo, however, mentioned that if both Atletico and Real Madrid face off in the final this year, the result would be different than what happened last time out.

“If the two Madrid clubs reach another final, I welcome it. The only thing is that we will win it afterwards,” Cerezo told El Chiringuito TV.

Since the turn of the century, Real Madrid and Atletico have faced off each other in the UEFA Champions League on six occasions. Out of those six outings, two were title deciders in 2014 and 2016. On both occasions, the Los Blancos came out on top.

That year, Atletico Madrid were was very close to winning Europe’s premium club competition. After Diego Godin’s goal in the 36th minute had given them the lead, Atletico managed to scrub off Madrid for the better part of the match.

The match, however, turned on its head when club captain Sergio Ramos headed home a beautiful equalizer in injury time. From that point on, Atletico seemed to have lost steam as they conceded three goals in 10 minutes to lose the match 4-1.

What happened in 2016?

In 2016, Real Madrid recorded their 11th Champions League triumph, although it needed a bit of luck.

On that night, Real prevailed through a penalty shootout. Interestingly, it was Ramos, once again, who got on the scoresheet. This time, however, his goal had opened the scoring for Real but the strike was cancelled out by Yannick Carrasco’s 79th-minute equaliser

Eventually, during the shoot-out, Cristiano Ronaldo, despite not performing up to his usual high standards in the match, managed to score the crucial penalty. This happened after Juanfran struck the base of the post in the eighth attempt.
