Liverpool’s interim head coach Amber Whiteley says that her side will have to be at their best when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

The Reds travel to the Amex Stadium to face The Seagulls on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool fell to a cruel 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup semi-finals last time out but interim boss Whiteley says that the team haven’t needed a lift ahead of the trip to Brighton.

“Of course, we were disappointed with the result,” Whiteley said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “We were so close to progressing through to Wembley but the mood overall has been very positive because the performance was so good.

“Chelsea are a top side and we went toe-to-toe with them, particularly within the first half. I think they found it really difficult to close us down.

“We have to take the positives from the game and put those positives into our remaining four games.”

Latest opponents Brighton & Hove Albion have lost back-to-back games but Whiteley knows that The Seagulls are stronger than their recent form suggests.

She said “They’re just sitting above us in the table right now and we hope to turn that on Saturday, that has to be the aim for us.

“It’ll be a tough test for sure. Brighton’s recent form will not be what they wanted but they’re a good side; they’re well-organised, well-drilled, so we will have to be at our best to get the result that we want.”

Liverpool can leapfrog Brighton & Hove Albion into fifth place in the Barclays Women’s Super League table with a win and Whiteley says that The Reds have their eyes set upon a strong end to the season.

She said “Yes, considering where we were when I first took over, [fifth place would be a success]. We want to finish the season as strongly as possible now. We want to take as many points as we can from these remaining four games.”

Liverpool’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Brighton & Hove Albion kicks-off at 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon.
