Liverpool defender Jenna Clark says that the club are targeting further progress in the Barclays Women’s Super League this season.

The Reds had a phenomenal campaign in 2023/2024. The Merseyside club were arguably aiming to break into the top half of the table but they exceeded expectations, ending the campaign in fourth position.

It is fair to say that Liverpool are somewhat ahead of schedule and that they may be seen as a greater scalp for opponents this season. Eclipsing last season’s successes will be tough but defender Clark says that it’s exactly what the team are aiming to do.

“I think our performances last year did take some teams by surprise, so whether they prepare more or differently this season, we will find that out,” Clark said when speaking in a Barclays Women’s Super League media event. “For us, we have our own expectations away from what the outside perspective is.

“We are aware of the challenges and how hard it’ll be but we will definitely look to push on from last season.”

Clark joined Liverpool from Glasgow City last summer. There’s a huge difference between SWPL1 and Barclays Women’s Super League football but the transition was relatively smooth for the Scot. Clark said that the biggest challenge was performing on a consistent basis week in, week out.

She said “It was good. It was definitely hard being my first season in the league. I think the hardest part is probably just the consistency. With the level of games that you’re playing, you’ve got to be at your best for 90 minutes every week.

“That was the hardest part but it was a challenge that I enjoyed a lot and obviously as a team, we had a really good season. I think it was a good first year.”

Liverpool’s defensive play was most impressive in 2023/2024 with The Reds conceding just 28 goals in 22 league games. Clark said that great partnerships were formed across the back-line.

She said “We have really good players all across the pitch and at the back, we just had really good partnerships. Off the pitch as well, we all got on really well which helped.

“We worked really hard for each other and we got the rewards with the points and performances but it’s definitely challenging, we know how hard it’s going to be again this season.

“We are under no illusion that it’s going to be difficult but I’m certainly looking forward to it.”

Liverpool kick-off the new season with a fixture against Leicester City at The Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens on Sunday 22 September 2024. Tickets are on-sale now and can be purchased by clicking here.
