“We want to say sorry” – Chelsea captain apologises to fans after Arsenal thrashing | OneFootball

Conor Gallagher admitted Chelsea were “nowhere near good enough” and apologised to the fans following their 5-0 defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday night.

The Blues went a goal down inside the first five minutes, but almost found an equaliser before the break with Enzo Fernandez hitting the post.

Maurico Pochettino’s men didn’t turn up for the second half and just rolled over conceding four times, three of which came in just 13 minutes.

It was Chelsea’s heaviest defeat of the season, and comes off the back of the 6-0 win against Everton and a promising display in the FA Cup semi final against Manchester City.

Speaking after the game Gallagher admitted the Blue’s weren’t good enough and apologised to the travelling fans.

“We are really upset and disappointed”, the 24-year-old told the club’s official website.

“It was nowhere near good enough. We just want to say sorry to our fans who came to watch that.

“It was nowhere near good enough and we will give everything we can to put it right in the next one.

“We started too slow. There were too many mistakes, it was too lethargic as a collective and we weren’t at it.

“We have only got ourselves to look at and there is work to be done.”

The Cobham graduate was honest in his assessment and made no excuses for the poor performance of the team.

“We can’t make any excuses or blame anything, we just have to look at ourselves as individuals and as a team”, Gallagher added.

“We know we can be better than that. We might be tired but that’s still not an excuse. It just wasn’t good enough from everyone today.”

Pochettino will need to pick his players up ahead of another tough game at high flying Aston Villa on Saturday evening, where defeat would more than likely end the Blue’s hope of qualifying for European football.
