Those three goals took Celtic’s tally in the Scottish Premiership this season up to 106, equaling the tally achieved by Brendan Rodgers’ Invincible side in his first season at the club in 2016/17.

With two matches left to play in the league – up at Pittodrie on Wednesday night and then on Saturday lunchtime against St Mirren at our Paradise Trophy Day, the current crop of Celts will be looking to smash that total.

In the Heat of Lisbon

The Celtic players are also well aware that they are now just five short of the post-war Celtic record for league goals scored in a season that was set by The Lisbon Lions back in that unforgettable season in 1966/67. The Lions incidentally scored 111 league goals in just 34 games so the current Celtic side has an extra four games advantage. Just saying.

Celtic’s Anthony Ralston, who was outstanding again at the weekend as a more than capable stand-in for Alistair Johnston who is being managed for a hip issue with the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen in mind, is well aware of that Lisbon Lions total and says that the Celtic players have it in their sights. Six goals in two games is not out of the question, especially as Celtic tend to score quite a few on trophy day.

And as I’ve got myself a ticket for Pittodrie, I’m certainly hoping that they will be putting on a show on Wednesday night!

“Yeah. That’s one of the targets, but that just comes with each game,” Anthony Ralston

“Yeah. That’s one of the targets, but that just comes with each game,” Anthony Ralston said, as reported by Scottish Sun. “We’ve been reminded of what our targets are and what we want to achieve. We want to beat records. We want to keep pushing. There’s never nothing to play for.”

Tony Ralston added: “There are always goals you want to achieve. We’re getting closer to those targets. We’ve got a few games left to complete and some achievements and targets we’ve got. We did well to get closer to one on Saturday and we need to keep going on Wednesday.

“We want to finish it off as strongly as possible and make it a really memorable campaign,” Anthony Ralston

“We want to finish it off as strongly as possible and make it a really memorable campaign. We know what we need to do in order to do that. But it’s already been a magnificent season for the boys in the squad and everybody involved.

“So we double down now even harder to try and finish it off as strongly as we can. First and foremost, it’s about being out there, doing the training sessions and then taking that into games.

“You can’t switch it on and off even in training. The boys are at it every day, we’re professional in how we go about our business and it means we know we can perform in every game.”

“We know that’s coming up, it’s no secret,” Anthony Ralston

While goalscoring targets in the league over the two matches this week are one thing, the really important afternoon comes a week later at Hampden in the Scottish Cup Final against Wednesday night’s opponents Aberdeen.

Ralston is well aware of the significance of the occasion as Celtic look to achieve a record breaking ninth treble, six of which have come in this century of Celtic dominance.

“We know that’s coming up, it’s no secret,” the 26 year-old Scotland right-back said. “But it’s not just on 24 May that we turn up and play in the final. We’ve got all these games before that, and we need to take care of them and go in with the right attitude.

“If we do that it will prepare us to be at that game and arrive there in the best place possible as a squad.”
