No goalkeeper has made more errors leading to goals this season
Enzo Maresca has doubled down on his backing of Robert Sanchez, insisting he retains trust in the Chelsea goalkeeper despite his latest horror show.
Sanchez was at fault for Erling Haaland’s crucial goal during Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City, which sees the Blues slip to sixth.
The Spaniard also made an error leading to Wolves’s goal in Monday night’s victory at Stamford Bridge and the calls for him to be dropped that were prevalent earlier in the season are growing once again.
Ahead of the trip to the Etihad, though, Maresca had insisted that while the 27-year-old is “still far, far, far from where I want him to be” he would remain as No1, for the rest of this season at least.
“We trust Robert for sure,” Maresca reiterated following the defeat in Manchester. “He is completely aware he is making mistakes in this moment. We trust Robert. We have one entire week and we will see the reaction for the next game.
“Robert, for sure, is completely aware he has to do better. He knows perfectly. In this moment it is like this. The good thing is he is the first one knowing, aware that he has to do better.”
Chelsea took the lead inside three minutes, with Noni Madueke gifted an opener by debutant Abdukodir Khusanov’s mistake.
The Blues then missed a glorious chance to go 2-0 up, when Cole Palmer overhit an attempt to square for Nicolas Jackson when clean through on goal.
“We started exactly the way we prepared,” Maresca said. “We could have scored a second one. I’m completely sure if we scored the second one, the game completely changes.
“The way they play, it is not easy to deal and they are masters in the way they play. The plan was working very good and if we scored the second one, we would be talking differently now.”
