Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to see Jesse Lingard sign a new deal at Manchester United

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful that Jesse Lingard will commit his future to the club this season.

The Red Devils star returned to Old Trafford following a fruitful loan spell at West Ham United. The fact that Solskjaer even wants to keep him is a testament to the imp[act he had with the Hammers.

Lingard came off the bench to decide the game against Young Boys on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, it was at the wrong end as the Swiss side pounced on his mistake to shock the Red Devils.

“Jesse has come back into us after a great spell at West Ham he showed his qualities and got back into the England squad, scoring goals.”

Despite the mistake, Solskjaer sees a future at the Theatre of Dreams for the 28-year-old. Lingard has just under a year to go on his current deal and could leave for a free next summer.

He has so far shown little inclination to stay and the club remain locked in talks regarding his future. The Englishman offers excellent strength in depth and scored off the bench against Newcastle United at the weekend.

“He’s got one year left on his contract and the club is talking to him and his dad. We see him as a Man United player in the future.”

Having come through the Red Devils academy, Lingard enjoyed prominence at the club under Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. The same cannot be said of Solskjaer who has often failed to get the best out of his player.

The Norwegian, however, has seemingly rekindled his faith in Lingard’s abilities. He appears to have few doubts regarding Lingard’s commitment to the club and hopes to see him deliver this season.

“We really want to see the best of him this season – we support him and we hope to keep him here with us, he’s a Red through and through.”

At 28, Lingard is in his prime and offers United excellent strength in depth. However, he is not going to be a regular first XI player and will have to settle for a supporting role. Whether that is what he truly wants remains to be seen.
