Julian Weigl: We’re incredibly disappointed with the result. We knew what to expect coming to Augsburg and we took on the fight well in the early stages. The first half was decent enough, but we weren’t accurate enough in the final third. We got suckered into Augsburg’s match plan in the second half and let the game slip away. They were sharper and were able to create chances, something we didn’t do. They get their goal and deserved to win. We had obviously pictured the restart going differently. Ninth place at the halfway stage is okay, but now we need to start picking up points.

Jonas Omlin: It’s a painful defeat. We know that it’s never easy in Augsburg. We were much better in the first half than in the second; we didn’t get going at all after the break and forgot our game plan. Augsburg did well though. They pressed hard and we struggled to work our way through it the same way we did in the first half. We played the ball long a lot more and struggled to win the second balls. It would have been good to at least have seen out the 0-0 until the end. Nevertheless, I have settled in well at Borussia so far. I’m very happy to be at Gladbach and have been made to feel very welcome by the lads and the club.

Daniel Farke: It goes without saying that we’re disappointed with the result. It was a game of two very different halves. We hardly allowed them any chances in the first 45 and controlled proceedings for the most part. However, we lacked precision going forward and didn’t carry enough of a threat. We fell off massively in the second half. It wasn’t that Augsburg were having chance after chance, but our defensive shape wasn’t solid enough to keep the opposition away from our goal. We were also even more careless with our passing than in the first half. In games like that, one moment can easily make all the difference. It was a good finish, but we had switched off for a moment. The goal was the deciding factor in the end.

Augsburg head coach Enrico Maaßen: I’m very proud of the way my team played today. After the defeat in Dortmund, we were determined to finally get the three points, and we managed that today. I think it was a deserved victory. We had an 80 percent pass-success rate today, which is brilliant for us. We took 14 shots compared to seven for our opponents. I think we played particularly well in the second half and created a number of goalscoring opportunities, and we were able to convert one of our two or three clear-cut chances – that’s a positive sign, as it’s something we had worked on in the winter break. We’re very happy to have gotten a win against a side as good as Gladbach.
