Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Alex Brooks says that the club’s main aim is to build on the success of last season.

After being ‘the odd ones out’ on opening day, Rovers finally kick-off the new Barclays Women’s Championship season when they play host to London City Lionesses at Ewood Park on Sunday.

It has been a summer of change at the club with the number of departures going well into double figures but goalkeeper Brooks says that Blackburn Rovers are aiming to build on last season’s sixth-place finish.

“We just want to keep improving on what we achieved last season,” Brooks said when speaking in a Barclays Women’s Championship media event. “We had a great season last year and we will be looking to improve on that.

“We’ve all been working hard [in pre-season] and we’re heading in the right direction. We are all excited to see what the year brings. We can’t wait to get started.”

Blackburn Rovers boss Simon Parker is one of the brightest young coaches in the professional game. Brooks said that Parker has created an excellent working environment for the players and that he has been a great support to her on a personal level.

“Everyone buys into what Simon says to us, we all trust him,” the keeper said. “The environment that he has created played a real part in driving us towards where we finished last season. We have to keep building on that this season.

“Simon gave me a lot of confidence personally whether he knows that or not. Just how he has managed me as an individual, I feel a lot more confident and that might have shown a little bit last season.”

Blackburn Rovers will play all of their home league games at Ewood Park this season. The club played seven games at the main stadium last season, winning four of those matches. After the positive experiences of last season, Brooks said that Ewood Park now feels like home.

She said “It’s the feel that it’s our club, it’s our home ground, they’re our fans and obviously, it’s a really nice pitch for us to play on as well.

“In the games that we played there last year, we built it up to be our pitch and our home.”
