Sheffield Wednesday earned a 2-0 away win over Hull City on Tuesday night

Danny Rohl has warned his Sheffield Wednesday side that they must be more ruthless in front of goal following the team’s win over Hull City.

A 2-0 victory over the Tigers has moved the Yorkshire outfit up into the top half of the Championship table, at least temporarily before tonight’s remaining midweek fixtures.

A first half penalty was converted by Josh Windass, with Michael Smith’s 81st minute strike securing all three points at the MKM Stadium.

This was Sheffield Wednesday’s first win since their victory by the same scoreline over Norwich on 5 November.

Despite having just 37 per cent of possession in the match, the Owls carved out 16 shots compared to Hull’s nine, and their two goals either side of half time were enough to take the three points back to South Yorkshire.

Even in victory, Rohl was critical of Sheffield Wednesday’s performance in front of goal, suggesting the team needed to be more efficient in converting its chances.

He believes that they will not get so many opportunities against top six or top eight sides, so will need to be ruthless in future fixtures.

“It was a deserved win from our side,” Rohl told The Sheffield Star.

“After 20 minutes we have to lead three or four nil.

“We created a lot of chances.

“But [Hull] are a good team with good individual quality.

“You can see it in the values of their squad and where they were last year, they are still a good team and you see it in some phases.

“We created three or four more opportunities and we have to score earlier.

“I think [Tuesday] we had maybe 10, 11 situations where we have to score.

“Today it was enough, but I think we have to push to increase.

“Against teams from the top eight or top six we will not get so many chances and we’d be sat here again talking about a good performance but without three points.

“Credit to my players, they did well.

“Today we can enjoy and then tomorrow we focus to the next one.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s recent form

Sheffield Wednesday moved up to 12th in the Championship table with this win ahead of tonight’s remaining midweek fixtures.

This was their second victory in their last five fixtures, with consistency proving an issue for Rohl’s side.

The Yorkshire team have won six of their 17 games so far this season, and have opened up a gap of seven points to the relegation zone.

Up next for Sheffield Wednesday is a trip to Pride Park to face Derby County on 1 December.

Danny Rohl’s criticism shows the standard he wants to set for Sheffield Wednesday

Criticising the team like this after a win is a positive sign for the standard that Rohl wants to set at Sheffield Wednesday.

A 2-0 away win against anyone in the Championship is a good result, but there are still things the team can learn and take away from a good night like that.

Bigger tests will await this team, and another trip this weekend to Derby will be a good chance for the side to respond to these comments.

Rohl is continuing to do great work at Hillsborough, and an attitude like that suggests he has what it takes to keep bringing the club forward.
