Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor isn’t taking anything for granted in the title race and says that nothing has changed following Chelsea’s 4-3 defeat to Liverpool in midweek.

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes conceded the title following her side’s defeat on Merseyside. The result left Manchester City six points clear at the top of the Barclays Women’s Super League table with the South West Londoners holding just a single game-in-hand.

When speaking to the media ahead of this afternoon’s fixture against Arsenal at The Joie Stadium, Manchester City boss Taylor insisted that nothing has changed in terms of his side’s title aims.

“It’s changed nothing,” Taylor said.”There’s been a lot of talk around it but the objective is the same, win the next game.

“We kept that as our focus, it’s about not worrying too much about elsewhere, Chelsea are still the champions.

“We’re fighting for that title but with regards to the other night, nothing’s changed to what we face at the weekend.”

While Hayes has ruled out Chelsea’s title chances, Taylor is giving The Blues complete respect. His focus is on Manchester City ending the season with a 16-match winning sequence in league competition.

He said “For us, it is about trying to continue our really good record of consecutive wins. Could we make it 15 on Sunday and after that, could we make it 16? We have to play until the final whistle, we have to fight to the end and we will, there’s no doubt about that.

“Trying to work out all of the possible permutations elsewhere is so difficult to do, you have to be a mathematician and even then, you won’t get the right outcome because nobody knows what is going to happen in the future.

“Chelsea are still the champions and that’s not going to change until the last day of the season. They could do it again, they’re still in there.”

Taylor’s mentality throughout his time as Manchester City head coach has been based around ‘controlling the controllables’ and he again emphasised the importance of that focus ahead of his side’s meeting with Arsenal.

He said “We just keep focusing on the next training session, focusing on the next analysis session, recovery session, whatever it is. Control the controllables; we can’t be playing the game in our head, the two weeks in our head, we just have to focus on the next action.

“We’ve done that really well this season, our concentration levels have been really good. We’ve not got carried away with ourselves in trying to predict starting line-ups of teams that are three or four games down the road, we are just really focused on the next game and the next training session.”

Manchester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Arsenal kicks-off at 2.15pm this afternoon. The match is a complete sell-out.
