Olympique de Marseille are almost out of the race for Europe after their defeat away to Stade de Reims this evening. A victory would have seen Les Phocéens leapfrog Olympique Lyonnais and RC Lens into sixth place in the table due to their superior goal difference.
However, as has been the case for so much of this season, Marseille were let down by their away record. The club have won only twice on their travels in the league, against Clermont Foot and FC Lorient, the worst and the second-worst team in the league respectively.
The Olympians’ chances were few and far between, even when they chucked almost all their attacking players onto the pitch. And they will now have to rely on Lyon and Lens both losing to stand the faintest chance of weaselling their way into the Europa Conference League.
Centre-back Leonardo Balerdi speaking to Amazon Prime was lost for words after another terrible performance on the road, “There is no explanation. I don’t know. The supporters and the club deserve better. It’s a reflection of our entire season. We did sh*t, yeah we did sh*t. Now, we have to win the last match, just for our self-esteem. And it will be over.”
