Board member for sport Markus Krösche, head coach Dino Toppmöller and Robin Koch deliver their verdict on the 5-1 loss to Leverkusen.

Board member for sport Markus Krösche: “We’re obviously disappointed. It’s an absurd result when you look at the game as a whole, because we didn’t do that badly. Leverkusen were extremely efficient and we conceded too easily. Overall, we weren’t efficient enough and didn’t capitalise on our opponents’ mistakes. We now have to make sure we win our final two games of the season.”

Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “We’d set our sights high and started the game well. After going 1-0 down, our opponents were clearly the better team and we were a bit fortunate not to concede a second goal. We had a good spell after our equaliser and should really have gone 2-1 up – that was a key moment. The same goes for their second goal shortly before the break, when we weren’t resolute enough in the tackle. The result feels harsh and absurd – it didn’t feel like [a heavy defeat] judging by our performance.”

Robin Koch: “The result is harsh. Things could have turned out differently. It’s no coincidence that Leverkusen are having a fantastic season. Everything has to go right against them, at both ends of the pitch. That didn’t happen for us today. We created goalscoring opportunities but made one or two too many mistakes in defence. We wanted to be bold in attack, win balls up front and then counter, which we were able to do on several occasions.”
