Ben Jacobs last night wrote an exclusive piece for TalkSport about the future of one of Chelsea’s many talented players who is likely to leave the club this summer.
Carney Chukwuemeka spent the first half of last season frozen out in the bomb squad, and then moved to Borussia Dortmund in January.
He impressed there – enough that they wanted to keep him for the Club World Cup, and extended his deal a little longer. He was part of the team that lost to Real Madrid in the quarter finals on Saturday. But now his spell there is over, and it’s decision time.

“Carney’s loan ends today,” said Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl, speaking on Saturday following the 3-2 defeat to Madrid in New Jersey.
“That was what we agreed with Chelsea. Now, let’s see. We will definitely have some more discussions in the next few days about his situation. I think it was a good move from Carney to join us.”
“Now let’s see how we manage everything. It won’t be easy, but for sure we will try to keep him because he’s a very good player. This topic is something for the future, and right now I don’t know what will happen.”
So Kehl is keeping his options open – but what does Jacobs tell us with all his insight? He claims that Dortmund are “open to another loan”, one with an option or a permanent purchase clause.
Chelsea still value Chukwuemeka at £40m, and the fact that there’s been no permanent bid yet shows that Dortmund have him valued below that. Kehl’s conclusion makes a deal sound even more likely:
“I can tell you that we are pretty close to the player, and he loves Dortmund, so this is quite good. Everything else will be decided between Chelsea and us. That won’t be tomorrow. That won’t be on Tuesday. I think it will take some more days.”
