Birmingham City head coach Scott Booth says that his side are moving in the right direction ahead of this afternoon’s Second City derby against Aston Villa.

The Blues have taken just one point from their six Barclays FA Women’s Super League games so far and hover dangerously above the relegation zone.

When speaking in his pre-match press conference, Booth said that his side are making progress following a summer of transition which has seen a new coaching team and virtually full set of new players arrive at St Andrews.

“It has been really tough, I think that was expected” Booth said. “I came in with my eyes open. I knew that things were going to be really difficult, we had to build so much, so quickly and that’s not easy. When you do that, I think that everything has got to go right straight away and you have to have a bit of luck as well.

“I think we have done well in some areas and I think that we have been a little bit unlucky with injuries, we’ve never really been able to put out our strongest side. On top of that, I think one or two of the scorelines have been a bit exaggerated, some of the games have been tighter than they have looked through the scorelines.

“I feel that we are making progress and each week, the players are understanding each other better but there is no doubt about it, you are going up against great sides that can beat you on any day.”

On a personal note, Booth went on to say that he is excited about leading Birmingham City into a Second City derby and playing in big games was one reason for him swapping Glasgow City for the Blues in the summer.

He said “One of the reasons that I took the job in the first place was to play in big games, crucial games, big games that mean something constantly. This is exactly that, it is a big match, a match that I have been looking forward to and we will see what happens on the day.”

The Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture between Birmingham City and Aston Villa kicks-off at 2pm. Fans can buy tickets at St Andrews between 10am-12pm this morning.
