England head coach Sarina Wiegman says that her side are not using their UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 semi-final victory over Sweden as motivation.

The two sides renew their rivalry at Wembley tomorrow night when they contest the opening match of qualifying for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025.

The Lionesses thumped the Swedes 4-0 at Bramall Lane in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 semi-finals but head coach Wiegman says that the victory won’t be used as motivation ahead of the latest meeting of the two nations.

“We haven’t used that,” Wiegman said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “That was then and it was a great moment but we all move on, lots has happened between that time and now and we are in a new situation.

“We know Sweden very well and they know us very well too. We are preparing for what we have seen lately from them, what we want to do and how we want to play. That’s basically what we’ve been talking about.”

England’s most recent tournament experience saw them miss out on a UEFA Women’s Nations League semi-final spot by a single goal. Wiegman said that The Lionesses have moved on from that disappointment with all focus being on their next challenge.

She said “We’ve moved on from that disappointment now. We went on a camp in February, played two games and the team really showed ‘this is who we are and this is how we want to play’. We played with so much energy and the quality of our game was really good too.

“They were friendlies but they gave us the opportunity to play many players, to see where we are at as individuals but also as a team and to see how the players relate to each other. Now, it’s qualifying and it is absolutely an opportunity for us to again show what we can do and how well we can play, that’s what we want to do tomorrow.”

England’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 qualifier against Sweden at Wembley kicks-off at 8pm tomorrow night. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
