“We are far from competing” – Enzo Maresca accepts his team are not good enough yet

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has actually been consistently playing down any talk of Chelsea being in a title race and has always been saying they aren’t yet good.

And after a shock defeat to Ipswich Town last night seeing his side go down 2-0 away from home in the Premier League, Maresca has reminded everyone that his side are far from competing yet, they are not there yet. And to be honest, this is also something I have been saying.

Sources: Two Bournemouth defenders ‘ones to watch’ for Chelsea in January, Joao Felix staying, Goalkeeper on hold, more…

I think the goalkeeper and defender positions are too weak right now for Chelsea to be fully competing with the best again, and I also think they lack and need a new striker profile to compete with Nicolas Jackson.

They are looking at Liam Delap as an option, and the way he played last night and completely tore Chelsea apart, I’d be on the phone to his agent and Ipswich this morning asking them all what it would take to get him to Stamford Bridge as soon as possible. Maresca once again offered praise to Delap after the game.

Maresca expected a rough period

In words picked up by Football London, Maresca said after the game:

“We expected this kind of moment during the season because we know that this kind of moment belongs to the football. It is almost impossible to have a season where you do not have a moment like now for us.

“But in the same time, not one of us in this room expected us to be where we are now. This means and shows that we are in the right direction, as I’ve said many times, but also shows that we are far from competing and consistency and to be there with the best teams in England.

“Again, I think we have to be satisfied where we are but at the same time, we have to know we need to do many things better.”
