England v Hungary

Scorers: Stones 37′; Sallai pen 24′

England were forced to settle for a point at home to Hungary after trailing to a somewhat contentious early spot kick.

Roland Sallai gave Hungary a surprise lead at Wembley from the penalty spot after Luke Shaw was adjudged to have committed a foul in the area for a high foot, much to England’s frustration.

But John Stones equalised from close range when a Phil Foden free-kick was flicked on for a chance the defender wasn’t going to miss to secure a point which was the least they deserved.

Faroe Islands v Scotland

A dramatic late Lyndon Dykes goal saw Scotland move to within one win of securing second place after an anxious and off colour display in Tórshavn.

A sluggish Scotland first half saw them thanking Craig Gordon for keeping the scores level when he pulled off a fantastic save from point-blank range to keep it scoreless.

Billy Gilmour went close three times after the break before Nathan Patterson swung a late cross in for a defender to deflect it off Dykes’ and into the net, which was eventually awarded a lengthy VAR check which felt like an eternity.

Portugal v Luxembourg

Scorers: Ronaldo pen 8′, pen 13′, 87′, Fernandes 17′, Palhinha 69′

Portugal eased past Luxembourg at home on Tuesday night as Cristiano Ronaldo netted a hat-trick in the win.

Ronaldo’s 52nd goal in his last 51 games for his country from the penalty spot gave Portugal an early lead and moments later he repeated the feat – again from 12 yards.

The rout continued when Ronaldo’s clubmate Bruno Fernandes punished a slack kick out by blasting in on the angle.

A fourth was added through João Palhinha as the visitors tired in the closing stages before Ronaldo’s 10th hat-trick for his country set a new international record in that regard.
