3 League Two clubs Wayne Rooney could make a return to management with.

Wayne Rooney has been tipped to take over as manager of a League Two club by former England international and pundit Carlton Palmer.

The Sheffield Wednesday legend exclusively revealed to Football League World that he believes his fellow former England international will have to drop into League Two to prove himself as a manager.

Rooney has endured a miserable few years in his managerial career following a promising start at Derby County. Stints at DC United, Birmingham City, and Plymouth Argyle have all been unsuccessful, with the Manchester United legend now unemployed.

In the wake of Palmer's claim of Rooney needing to cut his teeth in the fourth tier, we selected three League Two clubs that would be a good place for the 39-year-old to go and get his managerial career back on track.

Tranmere Rovers

The Croxteth-born manager could look to get back into the dugout at a ground which is just on the other side of the banks of the river Mersey from his hometown.

Tranmere Rovers have been on a steady decline in recent years, following back-to-back promotions six years ago. Now, they have been flirting with relegation back to the National League for the first time since 2018.

The club is currently without a permanent manager, following the sacking of Nigel Adkins. If they remain in League Two for next season, managing the Birkenhead-based side could be an exciting project for Rooney, as they look to rebuild in the fourth tier.

Salford City

This one seems a rather feasible option, as Salford City are owned by some of Rooney's former Manchester United teammates. The Greater Manchester outfit has been under majority stewardship of the Class of 92 for over a decade.

Salford's rise from non-league to the EFL was meteoric, but came to a halt as soon as they reached League Two. The Ammies have been stuck in the fourth tier since 2019, as the owners continue to work hard to progress the club.

With ambitions of becoming a Championship side in the future and the backing of people Rooney knows well through his time at Old Trafford, this could be the perfect opportunity for the young manager if the job becomes available.

MK Dons

When you look at underperforming clubs in League Two, it's hard to gloss over MK Dons sitting towards the bottom of the table. The Buckinghamshire side were expected to be in the hunt for promotion this season, but have had a disastrous campaign.

After Scott Lindsay was sacked by the club earlier in the year, the Dons have been under Ben Gladwin's stewardship in the interim. With no threat of relegation either, all the focus is on next season.

Rooney could be a good fit for MK, who'll be looking to right the wrongs of this season and get back into League One. With the backing of a new ownership group heading into the transfer window as well, the job will certainly be an enticing one for any unemployed manager.
