DC United manager Wayne Rooney has said Lewis O’Brien is likely to return to Nottingham Forest when his loan with the MLS club ends next week.

O’Brien has been on loan at DC since February after he was surprisingly omitted from Forest’s 25-man Premier League squad at the end of the January transfer window despite making 14 appearances prior.

The move has been a success, with the 24-year-old being a regular in the middle of the park for Rooney’s side.

Speaking to the Washington Post, Rooney said ” It’s probably looking more likely that Lewis will be going back to England. We haven’t managed to get an agreement with Nottingham Forest.”

He followed this up with some praise for the player, stating “We knew what it was. He’s been fantastic for us since he’s come in – a player of great character.”

His final game for the Washington-based side is set to take place against Inter Miami next Sunday, before he returns to Forest where he will look to stake a claim for first-team football under Steve Cooper.
