Derby County manager Wayne Rooney has revealed he turned down an approach from former club Everton to interview for their vacant managerial position.
The Toffees have been searching for a new head coach since sacking Rafael Benítez on January 18 and it appears their journey took them to trying to discuss the role with their former player.
Rooney is currently overseeing an attempt at a great escape with the Rams second bottom of the Championship eight points adrift of safety after being deducted 21 points earlier in the campaign due to financial difficulties.
In a press conference on Friday, the former Everton striker stated: “Everton approached my agent and asked me to interview for the job.
“I turned it down. I believe I will be a Premier League manager and I am ready for that 100%.
“But I have a job at Derby, which is important to me.”
Everton are reported to be speaking to former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard and ex-Porto boss Vitor Pereira about taking over at Goodison Park.
