In other words, while his classmates were sitting their A-level exams, Rooney was down the Premier League football, netting worldies and becoming one of the most exciting prospects in the game.

Within two years of that heady debut, the might of Manchester United came knocking, with the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson desperate to add Rooney to his ranks.

From day one, it was a match made in heaven.

Rooney took to Old Trafford like a duck to water, instantly embarking on a superb goalscoring tirade that lasted for years and years on end.

Rooney's Manchester United records and titles

During his time at the Theatre of Dreams, Rooney would win a glut of individual and team titles as he quickly established himself as one of Europe's most fearsome hitmen.

Over the course of 13 remarkable Old Trafford years, he would win five Premier League titles and one Champions League.

His partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo was like something straight off the pages of a fantasy football site as the pair carved out their own little piece of history at one of England's most historic establishments.

Eventually, Rooney would go on to eclipse Sir Bobby Charlton's imperious record of 249 goals for the club, becoming the greatest goalscorer ever seen in those parts with 253 to his name.

There can be no doubting that Rooney is one of the greatest footballers to ever kick a ball about on the hallowed Old Trafford turf, and his momentous antics will live long in the memory.
